Artist Of The Week: Yung Lean A Swedish Rapper

Yung Lean, born Jonatan Leandoer Håstad, is a Swedish rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer who became one of the pioneers of the cloud rap movement. Born on July 18, 1996, he spent part of his childhood in Belarus before moving back to Stockholm, Sweden, where he was raised in the Södermalm district. Coming from a very artistic family, his father was a poet and translator while his mother worked in human rights and diplomacy. Growing up, Lean was rebellious and creative, often getting into trouble in school for graffiti and drug use, but he also became deeply obsessed with hip-hop music and internet culture at a young age. Before music fully took off for him, he even worked at McDonald’s as a teenager. Outside of music, Yung Lean has become known for being very emotional, introspective, and artistic. Over the years, he has openly spoken about his struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and the pressure of becoming famous so young after his viral breakout online. In recent years, however, he has adopted a much calmer lifestyle, focusing on sobriety, meditation, fashion, art, and spending time close to longtime friends and collaborators in Sweden. Despite his mysterious image online, Lean has said that he eventually hopes to live a peaceful life away from chaos, with a family and children someday.

Four: Hurt

“Hurt” (2013) is one of Yung Lean’s earliest and most important songs because it helped introduce the world to his strange, dreamy, internet-inspired style of rap. Released when he was still a teenager, the song appeared on his debut mixtape Unknown Death 2002 and quickly gained attention online for sounding completely different from mainstream hip-hop at the time. It has garnered over 19.5M streams on Spotify and over 22M views on its official music video on YouTube. The production, handled by Yung Gud, had this cold, atmospheric vibe while Lean delivered emotionally detached lyrics filled with references to pop culture, fashion, drugs, and loneliness — something that would later become his signature style. What made “Hurt” stand out so much was its music video and overall aesthetic. The visuals looked intentionally low-budget, random, and surreal, filled with icy landscapes, Arizona iced tea references, and early Tumblr-era internet energy. At first, many people didn’t know whether to take him seriously, but the uniqueness of the song eventually helped Yung Lean build a cult fanbase online and laid the foundation for the entire cloud rap movement that became huge years later. Even today, many fans still see “Hurt” as one of the songs that truly defined Yung Lean’s early era.

FYI

  • Yung Lean became a global internet sensation at just 16 years old after his song “Ginseng Strip 2002” went viral on YouTube, helping pioneer the entire “cloud rap” aesthetic that influenced a generation of alternative rappers online.

Three: Bliss feat. FKA twigs

“Bliss” is a 2022 track by Yung Lean featuring English singer-songwriter FKA twigs, released as part of his Stardust mixtape. The song stands out because it shows a softer, more emotional side of Lean compared to the darker, chaotic sound he was originally known for. This track has garnered over 24M streams on Spotify and over 6.1M views on its official music video on YouTube. The song focuses heavily on themes like emotional escape, toxic love, isolation, and wanting peace in the middle of chaos, which are topics Lean has spoken about a lot throughout his career. Fans were excited to see two very emotionally expressive and experimental artists — Yung Lean and FKA twigs — on the same record. Their voices contrast each other beautifully, with Lean’s cold and detached delivery balancing FKA twigs’ haunting and delicate vocals. A lot of listeners also praised the production for sounding cinematic and almost hypnotic, making the song feel more like an emotional experience than just a regular rap track. The release of “Bliss” was also important because it reflected Yung Lean’s artistic growth. Earlier in his career, he was often dismissed online as just a meme rapper or internet trend, but songs like this showed how much he had matured musically and emotionally over the years.

Two: STORM II

“STORM II” was released on April 24, 2026, as part of the STORM I & II double-single and short film collaboration between Yung Lean and GENER8ION. Unlike the dreamy and emotional sound of some of his older work, “STORM II” leans into a darker, more cinematic and experimental atmosphere, blending distorted production, eerie vocals, and futuristic visuals that feel almost like a soundtrack to a dystopian film. Garnering over 13.9M streams on Spotify and over 12M views on it’s official music video on YouTube, the song reflects the current stage of Lean’s career: more experimental, mysterious, and artistically ambitious. Instead of chasing mainstream chart success, recent releases like “STORM II” show him focusing more on mood, visual storytelling, and creating full artistic worlds around his music. What made the release especially interesting was the visual aspect attached to it. Rather than dropping the song alone, the project came with an artistic short film that highlighted Lean’s love for fashion, abstract storytelling, and avant-garde aesthetics — things he has become increasingly associated with over the years outside of just music. The release continued Lean’s reputation for constantly reinventing his sound instead of sticking to traditional rap formulas.
