We are live in Gambia but broadcasting from the four walls of Nigeria. Our #AOTW on the show today is Jizzle D Lyrical Kiddo. The dancehall and rap artist from Gambia makes it finally to the box show just like the title of his latest baby. You’ll find out all of that later on the show. Who is Jizzle? He’s an artist who sings in three West African languages: Fula, Mandingo and Wolof. He also got songs mixed in English. Just this month March (3)/this year 2020, he’s been in the news for “leading on live streaming music sites such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer in The Gambia.”(eyegambia.org). The multiple award winning Afro-Pop sensationa is one of the biggest names in Gambian music right now making Gambian music a strong international force representing the people and the culture.

 

Yup! Actually according to him, his music has “been listened to in 71 countries worldwide in 4 continents on Spotify alone in over a year and two months” as of 2019. He’s clinched about 4 awards this 2020 in winning Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Video of the Year and Afrofusion Artist of the Year. Initially Jizzle’s dream was to become footballer-“Music was not my passion, it was soccer” he says

 

Yeah right! Jizzle was born Jerreh Jallow in 1989 (31) in Baka, Gambia. Jizzle found himself develop huge interest in music by watching his brother write and produce music. His older brother, Essa, is known in the music industry as “Breaker” was an aspiring artist at the time Jizzle became curious about his work”. Jizzle began singing at the age of 17 in 2009 after completing Grade 9 at Ndows.  Subsequently his first single ‘Over Sona’ (Going Hard’) dropped in 2010 ‘was released. He started with Hip-Hop, but later switched to Afro Hip/Hop. He’s more of that African sound.  We jam you that song right in a moment!

Jizzle released his second single-‘Life Is Not Easy’in 2011. The song really represents what Jizzy song is all about: poverty, war, young people as well as social ills. In 2014, he released a 14-track debut mixtape titled ‘Food Is Ready’. Some of the popular songs on the album are ‘Rumpa’, ‘Mi Deh Pan Mi Side’, ‘Together We Make It’, ‘Let Stand Up and ‘Fight For Our Right’ and ‘Man of The Year.

2017 was explosive for Jizzle breaking through the scene of Gambian Music. He be became more recognized with the hit song ‘Man Of The Year’ ft Atenola. The song was got nominated for that song in a big African award by the way.

In 2018, he released an EP called ‘The Next Big Thing’ consist of six tracks before embarking on a tour in Africa. In August 2019, the Gambia’s afro pop act debut album titled Finally dropped via Universal Music Nigeria. The albumwhich  is made up of 12 tracks representing the sounds of Afro pop, Afrobeat, and Afrofuzion with elements of Hip Hop was well received by fans. Finally features West African Artists such: Shaydee from Nigeria. Dip Doundou Guiss, Samba, Peuzzi, Bm Jaay, and Hakill from Senegal.  Gee from The Gambia.  He says the album Finally means the world to him “I put a lot of myself in it for the world to love and enjoy”. In September, 2019 he embarked on another tour to European, Sweden, Italy, and Germany to promote finally album.

·         Jizzle adopted the name Jizzle because he wanted something that started with a J like his given name

·         He sings are about war, poverty, young people and many other social ills.

·         Jizzle was influenced by artist like Lil Wayne, Drake and the like. He also admires the Nigerian artists like Wizkid, Mr. Eazi and Davido. He also pulled inspiration from Gambian artists like T-Smalls and Mighty Joe.

·         He’s more of rap but occasionally sings dancehall

·         In February 2020, has won won 4 different categories at the at WahSahlat awards : Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for Turn by Turn on his Finally Album, Video of the Year with Nobles for Killer, and Afrofusion Artist of the Year.

·         In 2019 he won 4 categories at the Wah Sa Halat Music Awards awards: Album of the year ‘The Next Big Thing’, Best Collobo of the year- Jalika feat Hussain, Song of the year- Jalika feat Hussain, Afro-Fusion artist of the year and People’s Choice Award.

·         In 2016, he was nominated in All Africa Music Award as Best artist, duo group in African hip-hop.

·         In 2015 won best Collabo ‘Man of the year feat Artenola in Wa Sa Halat Music Awards.

·         In 2014, he won the Best Upcoming Artist of the Year 2014 category at the Gambian Entertainment Awards.

 

He’s currently he is on a nation-wide tour in Sweden, Italy etc

I read in a press release by Music Union of the Gambia in November 2019, that Gambian’s music Industry lacks structure and have been “struggling” to put it in place with the  believe to that working with the government could help give it better structure. But Jizzle’s main goal with his music is to “take Gambian music to the next level”..Now I’m thinking who can we get Jizzle to collaborate with right now in Nigeria? African giant – Burna? Wizkid? Yemi Alade? Tiwa or Teniola? We look forward to collabs that would lead to bigger endorsement from you Jizzle.
