Ajax fans were left injured in Athens after home fans reportedly threw flares and a missile or petrol bomb which exploded close to the supporters.

Shocking images from inside AEK Athens’ stadium show the terrifying scene as football fans clash ahead of the club’s Champions League game against Ajax.

According to reports, AEK fans were seen launching what’s believed to be a ‘Molotov cocktail’ towards the away fans, which then exploded nearby.

Wire fences have been erected to keep the fans away from the pitch – there are also glass barriers in place, which kept supporters trapped in while the explosion, believed to have been caused by petrol, went off.

Police then intervened, confronting the visiting fans in further violent scenes. No arrests or injuries were immediately reported, although photos showed several supporters with blood on their face following the clashes.
