Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to get a final opinion on PSV winger Steven Bergwijn ahead of making a £25million move this month, according to reports. The Red Devils have long sought to bolster their attacking options, with Jose Mourinho failing in a move for Ivan Perisic, and successor Solskjaer is also looking to add more pace and firepower. Now The Sun report that Bergwijn has been identified as the perfect addition, with Solskjaer deploying scouts ahead of a late January move for the winger.
Although the Norwegian is only caretaker manager, the club are believed to be consulting him on transfers and he thinks Bergwijn would fit in nicely. Unlike Mourinho, Solskjaer sees Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as natural centre-forwards but has had to use one of the pair out wide, and now wants a genuine winger to supplement them.
Bergwijn ticks that box, able to play on either flank, and had been flagged by United’s scouts prior to Solskjaer taking over. However, the 45-year-old still intends to have Bergwijn watched in PSV’s upcoming matches against FC Emmen and Groningen before deciding whether to pursue the transfer before the window closes.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season for PSV, who top the Eredivisie table, scoring nine goals and laying on a further seven assists in just 16 outings – only three players have had a hand in more goals. Liverpool are believed to have watched Bergwijn earlier this season and United could struggle to prise him away from PSV midway through the season, with the Dutch champions desperate to keep him.
