The South Korean boy band ‘Seventeen’ sits on our AOTW

Seventeen (also known as SVT) is a South Korean boy band formed by Pledis Entertainment. The group consists of thirteen members. Seventeen has conquered a large audience since its debut and has grown into an internationally recognized K-Pop group with signature music and performances.

Four: Adore You

Adore You” released as the first single of their debut Studio EP “17 Carat”, garnered over 41M views on its official music video on YouTube. The song was released on 29th of May, 2015 through Pledis Entertainment and LEON Entertainment. It was written by Woozi, S.Coups, and Yeon Dong-geon.

The group debuted on the 26th of May, 2015 with their Ep “17 Carat” becoming the longest-charting K-pop album of the year in the US and the only rookie album to appear on Billboard’s “10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015″ list.

On October 28, 2020, Seventeen received a Prime Minister’s Commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards, in honor for their contribution to the development of South Korea’s contemporary pop culture and arts.

Seventeen was the first-ever K-pop artist featured on both MTV Push, a global campaign curated by MTV’s music and talent teams in both the US and internationally, and MTV’s “We Speak Music” campaign, which highlights artists who have shown the best performances on MTV under the theme of “Music as a universal language”.

Three: Cheers

Cheers” is a song by South Korean boy bang; Seventeen which was released on the 18th of July, 2022. It is the fourth track of the repackage album “Sector 17“. The official music video garnered over 57M on YouTube. It was written by Woozi, Bumzu, S.Coups, Hoshi and Vernon. The song was released through PLEDIS Entertainment.

Two: Super

With over 114M views on its official music video on YouTube, “Super”  is a song by South Korean boy group Seventeen. It was released as one of two lead singles from their extended play, FML, on April 24, 2023. It was directed by Oui Kim, and features high-energy choreography with 228 back-up dancers. It peaked at the number three spot on South Korea music charts and Singapores music charts along with other countries.

Awards/Nominations

  • Seventeen won three rookie awards in their debut year and have since earned six Bonsang (main prize) and three Daesang (grand prize) awards from various year-end award shows.
  • They also won the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
  • They were also nominated for Top Social Artist at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards
  • On December 30, Seventeen won the Special International Music Award at the Japan Record Awards.
  • At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, they were nominated for Best New Artist and Best K-Pop and won Push Performance of the Year.
  • At the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards, they were nominated for Best K-Pop and won Best Push Act and Best New Act. The group made history at both award shows as the first ever K-pop artist to be nominated and win these categories.
  • Hot” won the awards for Top 20 Songs for the Year; Overseas, Beat Dance Performance Oversees, Best Group Overseas At the Asian Pop Music Awards in 2022
  • Hot” won the award for Best Performance at the 2023 Golden Disc Awards

In 2020 & 2021, the Group won the Award for Artist of the Year and Worldwide Icon at The Fact Music Awards.

The lead single “Home” won ten trophies on weekly music shows: two triple crowns (achieving three consecutive wins on any one weekly music show) and a grand slam (winning trophies on Music Bank, Inkigayo, M Countdown, Show! Music Core, and Show Champion in a single promotion period).

Bonus: Left and Right

Left and Right” is a song by South Korean boy group Seventeen. It was released as the lead single from their 2020 extended play, Heng:garæ, on June 22, 2020. It garnered over 114M views on its official music video on YouTube. It was written by Woozi & Bumzu. “Left and Right” peaked at number one on the Gaon download chart and eight on the digital chart.

Controversy

There is controversy with our bonus track called “Left and Right”. An American singer Cupid posted a series of social media posts on August 13, 2020, alleging that Seventeen had plagiarized his song, “Cupid Shuffle.” He posted a screenshot from Time magazine that described the refrain as being “resonant of the Cupid Shuffle.” Cupid also stated that he felt the plagiarism had disrespected his culture and he wanted financial compensation. Cupid later tweeted that he had contacted Pledis Entertainment, Seventeen’s record label, and had not received a reply.

With over 134M views on its official music video on YouTube, “HOT” is a song by SEVENTEEN which  was released on May 27, 2022. It is the second and title track of the fourth full-length album “Face the Sun” and the sixth track of the repackage album “Sector 17“. Written by Woozi, Bumzu, Dan August Rigo through Pledis Entertainment. “Hot” won the awards for Top 20 Songs for the Year; Overseas, Beat Dance Performance Oversees, Best Group Overseas At the Asian Pop Music Awards in 2022. “Hot” won the award for Best Performance at the 2023 Golden Disc Awards
