Alfie Curtis, who played Dr Evazan in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, has died aged 87. The London-born actor played a threatening drunk man in the famous bar scene during the original 1977 movie. Alfie was also known for his roles in 1980 film The Elephant Man and the Eighties TV series Cribb.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, tweeted a tribute to the actor this morning.

He said: “Alfie Curtis made the Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina scene – one of the most memorable I’ve ever been a part of – even more memorable. “As horrific as he was on-camera, off-camera he was funny, kind and a real gentleman.

“Thanks Alf – you’ll be missed.” The cause of death has not yet been revealed.

To the delight of many fans, Evazan and his partner notably popped up in Rogue One, lurching around Jedha, though the younger version of the character was played by Michael Smiley.
