South African singer and songwriter ‘Amanda Black’ graces our #AOTW segment

Amanda Benedicta Antony (born 24 July 1993), known professionally as Amanda Black, is a South African singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Gcuwa her career began in 1999 at the age of 6 singing in church choirs. Amanda was a contestant on Idols South Africa season 11. Black relocated to Johannesburg in 2016 to pursue her career in music. She signed a record deal with Ambitiouz Entertainment in 2016 and achieved recognition in same year following the release of her hit single “Amazulu”, which was nominated for several music awards.

The official Audio garnered over 97k views on YouTube. Afrika by Amanda Black features Nigeria’s Finest Adekunle Gold. This is was released as a single off her Album Power through her new formed record label AfroRockstar in joint-venture with Sony Music Entertainment.

 

Three: Separate

“Separate” is a song by South African singer Amanda Black, released as the second single from her debut studio album Amazulu. Upon its release, the song topped charts on Metro FM. It garnered over 33k views on it’s official Audio on YouTube. It peaked at number 1 on the South African iTunes R&B Chart.”Separate” was written by Ambitiouz Entertainment label mate, Sjava and produced by Christer, who also acts as Amanda Black’s music director. The song “Separate” won Best R&B Single at the 15th Metro FM Music Awards.

This is off her most recent album “Mnyama” which was released on the 6th of August 2021. The official audio garnered over 50k views on YouTube. According to the artist, she wrote this song during the pandemic and it was her telling herself not to stop or quit.

 

Bonus: Khale

On 20 July 2018, she released “Kahle”, which gained more than 2million views on YouTube. This is off her album “Amazulu” which was released in late 2016. It was was released through Ambitiouz Entertainment with music production credits from Christer, Ruff, Vuyo Manyike and Lunatik; and additional songwriting credits from Jabulani Makhubo, Christer Kobedi and Sizwe Thabethe.

“Amazulu” is the debut single by South African singer Amanda Black, released on 1 July 2016. The official music video garnered over 7.2M views on YouTube. The song is credited to have been instrumental in the upward trajectory of her career following its massive reception which saw it gain rotational nationwide airplay and downloaded over 53,000 times. “Amazulu” won the  Record of the Year at the 23rd South African Music Awards and Song of the Year at Metro FM Awards and for Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album. Under a month after its release, the album sold over 31,000 copies, which led the Recording Industry of South Africa to certify it platinum.
