Rio Ferdinand has opened up about his relationship with Kate Wright on This Morning, revealing that he is “really happy now” and that his kids are the “happiest they’ve ever been”. He also revealed that they have been heavily involved in their relationship from the start. The former footballer, 38, only recently confirmed his relationship with the Towie star, 26, and has three children with his former wife Rebecca. His wife of six years, Rebecca, died in May 34 2015 after a short battle with cancer while his mother Janice died of breast cancer in July this year.

Rio is currently promoting his new book, Thinking Out Loud: Love, Grief and Being Mum and Dad, which tells his tragic story and aims to help others with grief and support. Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning today, he spoke about helping his children deal with the grief surrounding their mum’s death.  He is father to Lorenz, Tia and Tate. “I always stress that it’s ok to cry,” he said. “One of my boys did break down and cry.” But, moving onto the happier subject of his new relationship, Holly and Phil asked how it was going.  “I’m really happy now, the kids are really happy, it’s the happiest they’ve been. I’m in a relationship and it’s going well,” he revealed.  “My kids deserve to be happy, they’ve had tragedy for the last few years of their lives.

“They have to be part of that conversation. There’s not been at any stage going into this relationship that they’ve not been involved. Even in terms of introducing – how they want it to be done.  “As long they feel involved in that conversation, I think there’s a chance that you can get to that place of happiness.” Rio said that his relationship with Kate was having a good effect on Lorenz, 11, Tate, nine, and Tia, six. He also revealed that his one big regret after the death of his mum and wife had been that he didn’t tell them that he loved them enough. “Those are the types of things that keep me up at night, he admitted.
