Princess Diana’s first words to Charles after their bitter separation have been revealed for the first time.

The royal couple separated in 1996 after 15 years of marriage.

Now, royal expert Ingrid Seward has revealed how the couple had a frosty meeting at the apartment they shared in Kensington Palace.

Writing in her book  ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, Ingrid reveals: “On the day their separation was announced, Charles and Diana met in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment at Kensington Palace.

“They sat together on the yellow brocade-covered sofa”, reports the Express.

She continues to tell how Diana asked Charles, “Why did this have to happen?” as she sat across from him in the drawing room.

New documentary Charles and Di: The Truth Behind their Wedding, also looks at so-called ‘warning signs’ during an interview the couple gave ahead of their wedding day.

Excitement was growing around the world as the couple prepared to tie the knot in what would be the wedding of the decade.

Angela Rippon, the anchor on BBC news, and ITV’s Andrew Gardener were the two lucky journalists invited to quiz the couple.

Their questions had to be pre-approved and they were warned not to stray from the script, and Charles and Diana came across as a couple very much in love and looking forward to their wedding.

But looking back with hindsight, there was one moment of the interview which revealed the heartbreaking reality.

Speaking in a new Channel 5 documentary Angela discussed the interview in depth for the first time.

She said: “When we first arrived at the Palace and met Prince Charles and Diana in a corridor, Prince Charles as always was very relaxed. Lady Diana less so, it was a whole new experience for her.”

Before they went in they were given a briefing by the Queen’s press secretary Michael Shea.

He told them very firmly that the interview would be ended if they asked any questions that had not been agreed.

  • Prince Harry leaving the Zefi bar in Kensington
Harry’s code name on nights out
  • Hidden secrets in Royal photo
  • Fergie broke big rule on wedding day

During the interview Michael stood directly behind Angela out of camera shot, but in Diana’s eyeline.

“I’m not quite sure how comfortable it made her feel.

“I got the impression that Princes Charles was very protective towards her.

“Lady Diana was almost slumped in the chair, she was in new territory. She was out of her depth.

“Put any 20-year-old in front of a television camera and say this is an interview about what could be one of the most important days of your life and it’s going to be seen by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and there is this man standing behind the person interviewing you making sure you get it right.

“Crikey, anyone would be nervous.”

Angela watched the interview back in full for the first time for the new documentary.

She said: “With the knowledge of hindsight you read so much more into body language, what was said, looks that were given, reactions.

“That’s the value of hindsight isn’t it.”

But the final few moments of the interview really stand out to her, when she wishes the couple a lifetime of happiness.

Charles looks Diana, but she looks down at the floor.

“That expression on Diana’s face at the end speaks volumes.

“Maybe we should have read so much more into that five seconds at the end the interview. It might have told us so much more about what was to come.”After the interview they were invited up to the private quarters for a cup of tea, and away from the strict press team Angela asked about the dress.

She didn’t ask for details, but just asked the bride if it was everything she had dreamed of.

Angela said: “She clasped her hands together and she said, ‘Angela, I had my last fitting just a few days ago in the work room and when I put the dress all the girls in the workroom applauded and some of them cried and said ma’am, you look just like a fairy princess.'”
