Norovirus infection can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea that start suddenly. Noroviruses are highly contagious. They commonly spread through food or water that is contaminated during preparation or through contaminated surfaces. Noroviruses can also spread through close contact with a person who has norovirus infection.
Causes
Contaminated Food: Eating food that was handled by an infected person who did not wash their hands properly. Foods can also be contaminated at the source, such as raw oysters harvested from sewage-polluted waters.
Contaminated Surfaces: Touching objects, surfaces, or utensils that harbor the virus (fomites) and subsequently touching your mouth or nose before washing your hands.Person-to-Person
Contact: Having direct physical contact with someone who is currently sick, such as caring for them, sharing food, or changing diapers.
Aerosolized Particles: Inhaling tiny airborne droplets generated when an infected person vomits.Contaminated Water: Swallowing water from polluted wells, recreational lakes, or poorly treated swimming pools.
