Christmas can be a money guzzling holiday. Your income stays the same, there are so many activities that will require your financial commitment around at Christmas.

But before you spend all of your December income, remember that January is a long month, and you’ve got bills to pay in January too, and even school fees if you have a child. It’s entirely possible to have a merry Christmas on a budget though. Here are a few ideas:

1. DIY decorations

If you’re really into Christmas decorations, there’s no need to spend money to decorate your home. Visit Pinterest or YouTube to learn how to make DIY decorations from materials already lying around in your home.

2. Visit people

Because visiting people is infinitely cheaper than hosting anyone. Unless there’s fuel scarcity, of course.

3. Host a potluck

If you’ll be having your friends over, you can host a potluck with your friends so there isn’t a lot of financial pressure on you. With the food sorted, just turn up the music and have fun with your loved ones.

4. Attend Christmas carols

If you’re a music lover, you’ll definitely enjoy some beautiful Christmas carols. You can look out for Christmas carol programme on Eventbrite, or just ask a friend if they know of any you would like.

5. Visit a park

Most parks are free, so you can go there to hang out with friends, or to just be by yourself.

6. Binge watch movies

Honestly, this is the best time to Netflix and chill. Binge watch your favourite series alone or with friends. The memories will carry you through when you’re stuck in traffic on your way home in January.

7. Sleep!!!

Naps were despised when we were children, but now we’re older and know better. Sleep that beauty sleep, girl! After all, January is almost here and you’ll soon be snoozing on your 4am alarm.
