Auchi Polytechnic is said to have all it takes in terms of manpower and facilities, to take off as a full-fledged university.

The bill seeking the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi to a university has passed the second reading on Thursday, March 8, 2018.

According to the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Johnson Oghuma (Edo-APC), the bill would reduce the number of prospective undergraduates in Nigeria.

The lawmaker added that the bill would also achieve global standards where polytechnics were being converted to universities to bridge the gap and harmonize standards of tertiary education.

“In developed nation’s like America and United Kingdom, most polytechnics have been converted to universities of technology and helped to upgrade education generally.”

Another reason why the bill is much needed according to Oghuma is that it would provide space for post-graduate studies which no polytechnic provides.

Oghuma, however, argued that Auchi Polytechnic had all it took in terms of manpower and facilities, to take off as a full-fledged university, adding that that youth from that catchment area would now have a place to go and study to meet their various lifetime aspirations previously denied them due to quota and catchment policy in the country.

Auchi Polytechnic gets new Rector

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Momodu Sanusi Jimah, as the substantive Rector of Auchi Polytechnic.

A statement by Mustapha Oshoibugie, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the institution in Benin on Tuesday, March 6, said that the appointment takes effect from Feb. 23 and for a period of four years.
