A dad and his daughter found dead in a flat could have been murdered over a big betting win, it has been claimed. Noel Brown, 69, and his daughter Marie, 41, were found in the early hours of Monday after police forced entry into his home in Deptford, south London.

A neighbour said she heard ‘petrified screams’ from the property though she wasn’t sure if they belonged to a man or a woman. Police said Mr Brown was “well-known” in the area, particularly local betting shops where he was a regular. Last night it was claimed detectives are examining whether Mr Brown may have been followed home after a big win. Marie lived in Southwark and was visiting her dad’s house at the time.

DCI Simon Harding said: “I urgently need the public’s help to establish the last movements of both Noel Brown and Marie Brown in the week before their deaths.

“Noel, in particular, was well known in the area, and he frequently used local betting shops. “I want to hear from anyone who spent time with him or saw him at any point in the past week, especially if he was in the company of people with whom he didn’t normally associate.”  It’s not clear exactly when the killings took place. Collette Lavelle, 46, who has lived on the estate for 25 years, said: “I heard some screaming at two in the morning.  “There was just screaming. I shut my bedroom window and went back to bed, because you hear it so often. “It’s a regular thing to get up, shut your windows.”

“It’s nothing like they were messing about. It was like proper screaming. It was like a petrified scream.” Police had been alerted to concerns for welfare and discovered the bodies. A cause of death in the case has yet to be revealed. But detectives have launched a murder inquiry and have appealed for witnesses.

The house remained sealed off as forensic officers examined the scene on Monday.
