There was pandemonium, yesterday, at Ewet Housing axis of Oron Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, when four robbers attacked a leading commercial bank’s customer, dispossessing him of undisclosed amount of money. The customer, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time, had withdrawn a large amount from the bank at 3p.m., and was about driving home when the robbers, who had laid an ambush close to his car parked outside the bank’s premises, attacked him.

The robbers, who drove an ash-coloured Toyota car (plates’ number withheld), shot sporadically into the air to scare away people. An eyewitness said: “I was just inside my shop when I heard a gunshot in front of the bank. We all ran to see what was happening. They shot the front tyre of the victim’s car and the car dragged along for a while before ending up in a ditch. “Two masked armed men came out of a car and ordered him to open his boot or they will waste his life.

The man had no option than to obey them. He opened the boot from inside the car and I saw the robbers packing the money into their own car. “Two of them wore masks,” the source, who did not want his name mentioned, added. When Vanguard visited the scene few minutes after, the Police had cordoned off the place, barring people from taking pictures. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Chukwu Ikechukwu, has confirmed the incident, saying “the DPO has just briefed me about the incident. “What we did was to send patrol teams to cordon off all the roads in Uyo. That is what the patrol teams are doing right now. Nobody, for now, has been arrested.”
