British-Nigerian Rapper ‘Santan Dave’ sits on our #AOTW segment

David Orobosa Omoregie (born 5 June 1998), known professionally as Dave or Santan Dave, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer and actor. Dave has gained acclaim for his socially conscious lyricism and wordplay, and is among the most recognized British rappers.

 

Dave released his debut extended play Six Paths in 2016, after the release of a number of successful singles including the grime song “Thiago Silva” with AJ Tracey. In the same year, Canadian rapper Drake premiered a remix single of Dave’s song “Wanna Know” featuring himself on OVO Sound Radio. Dave released his second EP Game Over in 2017. In 2018, his political song “Question Time” — which directed criticism towards the British Government — won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song. In the same year he released “Funky Friday”, featuring Fredo, which became his first number-one hit on the UK Singles Chart and his first platinum certified release.

Dave was born David Orobosa Omoregie on 5 June 1998 in the Brixton area of South London, the youngest of three sons born to Nigerian parents. His father, Frank Omoregie, is a pastor and his mother, Juliet Doris Omoregie, a nurse. Dave’s father was deported to Nigeria when Dave was just a few months old as he believed he was travelling on a missionary visa but instead was on a visitor’s visa. Juliet was allowed to stay to raise her sons. He was raised in nearby Streatham.

Got Nominated for Song of the year at the 2020 Brits award. Released as the third single from Dave’s debut studio album Psychodrama. The song was written by Dave, Burna Boy and Jonathan Mensah, and produced by Fraser T. Smith, Jae5 and Dave.

No. 1. Funky Friday feat. Fredo

Won best Independent Track at the AIM awards in 2019. The song was self-released as a single on 5 October 2018 for streaming and digital download. It includes a guest appearance from fellow British rapper Fredo, and was produced by 169 and Dave. It debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Dave’s first number one.
