American Superstar Childish Gambino Makes Our AOTW Segment This Week

Spotlight on a music personality though pretty much of a movie personality. But he surpasses a one hit artist.  I mean to be a Grammy winner, your music have to be great. He’s American actor, comedian, writer, producer, director and DJ. He performs as a DJ under the name mcDJ. Speaking of movies, he’s playing the lead role in the currently trending Disney’s Lion King Remake costarring with Beyoncé! More clues! He’s compared himself to the late Tupac. “I am the new Tupac in a strange way” in his voice. Well some others have done that in recent times. T.I did that recently in a diss track. Y’all remember Tupac died in 1996. RIP mahn! Childish Gambino is a pretty big deal, and he knows it.

 

Yeah right! He said “I know everybody likens themselves to Tupac a lot”. Anyway, Glover has successfully transitioned his career from television to music and now film, thanks to starring roles in upcoming blockbusters Disney’s The Lion King remake which is set to hit cinemas by 19th July (Friday). He is/was in Guava Island – a 2019 movie. He’s in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, etc. Gambino has successfully transitioned his career from television to music and now film. So, what took him to doing music?

 

Donald McKinley Glover, popularly known as Childish Gambino was born on September 25th 1983 (will be 35) in Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States. He was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, a suburb outside of Atlanta. After attending high school at DeKalb School of the Arts, he attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in Dramatic Writing. Fast forward to music, in June 2008, he released the independent mixtape Sick Boi.

 

In September 2009, he released his second mixtape Poindexter. A pair of mixtapes, titled I Am Just A Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2 were released in close succession in 2010 and followed that July by his 5th mixtape Culdesac. His first extended play, titled EP was released as a free digital download and a music video for the song “Freaks and Geeks” was released in March 2011. Glover commenced his nationwide IAMDONALD Tour in April.

 

NO 4: HEARTBEAT (Glover’s debut single off the album Camp. It peaked at No18 on the Hot 100 Singles and No54 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in 2011) The Recording Industry Association of America certified “Heartbeat” gold in June 2014–making it Glover’s first gold certification.

 

Camp the album –his debut studio was released in November 15, 2011 as well as his singles “Bonfire” and “Heartbeat. Prior to the album release, He signed to Glassnote Records and embarked on The Sign-Up Tour. The album debuted at no11 on the Billboard 200, and was well received by critics who found the album “undoubtedly one of the best records of any genre to come out in 2011. Childish Gambino embarked on his Camp Gambino tour in April 2012. The tour was scheduled to commence in March but was postponed to April due to Glover’s fractured foot.

 

In 2013, Glover signed on to create a music-themed show for FX titled Atlanta. He dropped his second studio album, Because the Internet in December, debuting at No7 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album yielded the singles “3005”, “Crawl” and “Sweatpants”. To promote the album, the short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, which he wrote and starred in was released prior to the album’s release and serves as its prelude. Additionally, a 72-page screenplay designed to sync up with the album was also released. The album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. From February to May 2014, he embarked on The Deep Web Tour. His 3rd studio album “Awaken, My Love!” was released by Glassnote Records in December 2, 2016 and produced by Glover and his longtime collaborator, Ludwig Göransson.

 

NO 3: No Redbone – (off Gambino’s 3rd album “Awaken, My Love!”. Won Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2017) also nominated for: Record of the Year and Best R&B Song the same year, off the album “Awaken, My Love!” which debuted at #5 on the US Billboard 200, #2 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Redbone was one of the s three singles that supported the album when it was released. The album received Grammy Award nominations for Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards.  In February 2019, the song on #1 “This Is America won the Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Best Music Video.

Glover Fact
Glover’s musical stage name, Childish Gambino, came from the Wu-Tang Clan’s name generator. Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group formed in the New York City in the late 1992. They are regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop groups of all time.

He was reportedly settled a royalties dispute with Glassnote Records in March 2019, the label who released his first three albums.

“Trouble”by British artist Leona Lewis featuring Gambino peaked at No.7 on the UK Singles Chart. Made Gambino’s first UK top 10 single.

He’s written/acted in several movies/TV Shows: some of them include: Guava Island” (2019), Atlanta” (2016–2018)”Funny as Hell” (2011), Live at Gotham” (2009), 30 Rock” (2008–2009) Mystery Team” (2009)

Despite never speaking about her in any interview he had participated in up until then or since, he was photographed alongside a very pregnant woman while on vacation in Hawaii in January of 2016. The same woman he thanked unnamed while accepting his trophy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Golden Globes in January of 2017. He also confirmed that they’d become parents at the time.

NO 1: This Is America: Won Grammy Awards 2018: Record of the Year; Song of the Year; Best Rap/Sung Performance; Best Music Video. Gambino didn’t appear at the Grammy ceremony  but took home the award for the song. His Co-writer and producer Ludwig Göransson, engineer/mixer Derek “MixedByAli” Ali and mastering engineer Mike Bozzi accepted the award in his place.

The song calls out injustice among others. It speaks to everyone/country of the world. Nigerian artist FALZ did the Nigerian version. It speaks to people/government and was later pull down.
