American indie-pop trio ‘AJR’ sits on our #AOTW

AJR is an American indie pop trio composed of multi-instrumentalist brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met. Their most successful songs include “I’m Ready”, “Sober Up”, “Burn the House Down”, “Way Less Sad”, “100 Bad Days”, “Weak”, and “Bang!”.  In 2019, their third album Neotheater debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200, and hit number one on the Top Rock Albums chart  “Bang!” is their highest-charting song and only song to reach the top 10, peaking at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 22, 2021.

 

The name “AJR” comes from the first initials of the three brothers, Adam, Jack, and Ryan. The band writes, produces, and mixes their music in the living room of their apartment in New York City.  Their musical style has been described as “eclectic,” combining elements of pop, doo-wop, electronic, and dubstep.

 

No. 4. It was released as a single on August 22, 2013, through AJR Productions and Warner Bros. Records. The song is included on their debut extended play (EP), I’m Ready (2013), and their debut album, Living Room (2015). The song charted best internationally in Australia, where it peaked at number five and was certified multi-platinum. It reached number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014, and was certified platinum in 2015.

Jack Met – lead vocals, guitar, melodica, ukulele, drums, percussion, keyboards, synthesizers, samples, programming, cowbell

Ryan Met – vocals, programming, keyboards, ukulele, producing, samples

 

No. 3. Weak: It was first released on their EP What Everyone’s Thinking on September 16, 2016, by their own label AJR Productions, and was later featured on their second studio album The Click (2017) it peaked at number 37 in Australia and 6 in Belarus.

 

No. 2. Way Less Sad: It was released on February 17, 2021 via S-Curve Records as the fourth single from the band’s fourth studio album OK Orchestra. ]It is an up-tempo pop song that features a trumpet with lyrics about mental health. The official music video was released on February 17, 2021. They performed at a number of New York City well-known locations, including the TWA terminal at the John F. Kennedy International Airport and Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn. The video has 14million views on youtube.

No. 1. Bang: Released on February 12, 2020, through their own label AJR Productions. The song is the lead single from the band’s fourth album OK Orchestra. It was produced by Ryan met and Jack Met. At the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, “Bang!” took home the award for Top Rock Song, beating out “Monsters” by All Time Low, “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals, “My Ex’s Best Friend” by Machine Gun Kelly, and “Level of Concern” by Twenty One Pilots. AJR also received nominations in the Top Duo/Group and Top Rock Artist categories, ultimately losing to BTS and Machine Gun Kelly, respectively. It has 50 million views on youtube.
