Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi will miss the third-place match of the Africa Cup of Nations against Tunisia on Wednesday (today).

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Eagles coach Gernot Rohr revealed that Mikel was down with injury.

He said, “He picked up an injury yesterday (Monday) and couldn’t train so it is unlikely that he will play.

“He’s had a good tournament and we must remember there are people who participated in the qualifiers who are not here. He is here because he accepted to come without preconditions.”

Also missing, will be defender Chidozie Awaziem, who is serving a suspension after being cautioned twice in the knockout stages.

He received a yellow card in the Round of 16 game against Cameroon and also got another one in the semi-final tie against Algeria.

Mikel, who has featured in only two games in the 2019 AFCON has stated that this would be his last AFCON.

With the announcement, the third group game, the 2-0 loss to Madagascar, where he was substituted for Alex Iwobi, might be his last game for the Eagles.

The 32-year-old Mikel is the third highest capped Eagles player with 89 appearances, only behind Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo, both with 101 caps.

He made his Eagles debut August 17, 2005 in an international friendly against Libya.
