A swollen vagina is not always a cause for concern. There are certain biological situations that can cause this to occur on its own.

It is, however, important to know some of the causes of vagina swelling to better understand when it is, in fact, a big deal.

1. Irritation

Did you just switch to a new body cream? Or change the detergent you use to wash your underwear? Sometimes, your vagina can react to certain chemical or even harsh toilet paper.

What to do: If you notice a swollen vagina after introducing a new product that comes in direct contact with the area, stop using the product and see if the irritation clears. If it does, then that product isn’t for you.

2. Rough sex

Yes, when you go hard and fast, the friction can cause your vagina to swell. Especially when you don’t use lubricants.

What to do: If rough sex is the culprit, you may just have to wait it out. If you experience pain, some pain medications can help with that.

3. Bacterial Vaginosis

This condition is caused by the rapid growth of bacteria in the vagina area. In addition to swelling, other symptoms you may notice include itching, burning and a fishy discharge.

What to do: Many women don’t require treatment for this as it can sometimes sort itself out. But if symptoms persist for more than a week, see a doctor.
