Menstrual cramps/ pain are those discomfort around the lower abdomen, the lower back and even the thighs when menstruating. This isn’t relatable for most women, the cramps that is, but some women, the pain is unbearable. I have a friend that goes to the hospital whenever she gets her period. For people like me, standing up on the first day of my period is a difficult thing to do amongst other things but then I tried out some things which will be helpful to you in the long run. Let’s begin with;

1. Painkillers: Painkillers like Ibuprofen, Felvin and Naproxen will work well to ease the cramps although they might make your flow lighter but it’s nothing to be worried about. According to an article by WebMd, if you have asthma, Peptic ulcer or stomach issues generally, it’s advisable to stay away from NSAIDs that is; Nonsteriodal Anti-inflammatory Drugs like the ones I mentioned earlier but you can use Non- NSAIDs like acetaminophen. But still if you’re not sure of what to use, visit a doctor to discuss your options.

2. Hot water Treatment: Applying heat to your lower abdomen really works wonders I kid you not because I can testify to this. You can use heat pads, heat wraps or even having a warm bath and trust me, the cramps reduces drastically. According to an article by Medical News Today which was published on The 15th of October, 2018, this is a simple way On how to make a heat pad:

First, place a damp, folded towel in an oven set to 149°C. Leave the towel in the oven for 5–10 minutes. Once it is warm, wrap the towel in a thinner, dry cloth and place it on the affected area for 15–20 minutes Or you can Take an old clean sock and fill it three-quarters of uncooked rice, or oatmeal. Tie or sew it shut and heat it in the microwave for 1–2 minutes then apply to the lower abdomen. You could also just buy the pads itself or hot water bottles from a nearby pharmacy.

3. No Sweet Tooth: Junk foods or anything sweet is really not your friend during a time like this believe me, I know. It can be very tempting but be a fighter and avoid them during this trying times because they’re not your friends, they’ll only bring more pain. Why you should avoid sugary foods is because they can cause bloating and inflammation which will make the cramps worse. For ladies like me, once you have that sugar cravings, do well to take fruits instead.

4. Massage with essential oils: According to an article by Health line, massage therapy for about 20 minutes will help ease the cramps. It involves pressing specific points around your abdomen, side, and back helping out with the pains you’re going through. Oils like lavender, Peppermint and rose can be used and should be diluted in carrier oils like almond oil.

If any of this fails for you, please visit a doctor immediately. There may be an underlying health condition responsible for the bad menstrual cramps.
