4 Female DJs Around The World

Share
Our #AOTW today will be featuring 4 female Djs around the world who have been picked in no particular order but based on countries reported to have had a handful of successful female DJs between 2016 and 2018 in an industry dominated by male. According to Forbes, it was compiled by calculating the artist’s pretax earnings among other calculations between 1st June 2017 and 1st June 2018 . Calvin Harris  made the list again for the sixth consecutive year earning  $48 million followed by The Chainsmoker with $45.5 million, Tiësto $33 million, Steve Aoki – $28 Million, Marshmello – $23 Million, Zedd – $22 Million, Diplo – $20 Million, David Guetta – $15 Million, Kaskade – $13.5 Million, Martin Garrix – $13 Million, Axwell Λ Ingrosso – $12 Million, Kygo – $11.5 Million, DJ Snake – $11 Million, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike – $10.5 Million and Afrojack – $10 million.

Female Djs are reportedly thriving off the cost Nigeria and presumably the Africa continent. This 2018 alone, I’ve read about turntables queens in Europe -especially in Berlin the capital of Germany. This also reminds me of 5 some countries with best music : #1Switzerland, #2Canada, #3Germany, #4United Kingdom, #5Japan highlighted by PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook couple of years ago based on annual review of the Global entertainment and media space. It’s  a 4-year (2015-2019) projection into 10 countries with the largest music markets in terms of digital downloads, digital streaming, live music and physical music sales. So, are there no top notch turntable queens  from any of those countries making thing happen and being paid handsomely? Or are female DJs not putting in the same amount of energy the male counterparts put in DJing?

Speaking of Japan  (an Asian country), recently  EDMDroid –an entertainment agency in-charge of Electronic music, clubbing and dj news in Malaysia released  list of top 10 Asia’s hottest female djs of 2018 .They are female DJs from East Asia to Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and more. let’s check famous Japanese pop and R&B DJ, singer and producer under Universal Music Japan DJ Kauri out and determine what she’s would  be like on the live mixing table

No 4: DJ Kaori Miss Dj featuring Double

DJ KAORI singer and producer under Universal Music Japan on that song. Dj Kauri has sold over 3 million copies of her remix and mix albums, she is one of the best selling female DJs in the world.

Her first DJ mix album “Def Soul” Mix” was released in 2000. Since then she has released over 30 DJ albums, 4 DVDs and a few original singles.

Obviously female DJing is beginning to get more recognition around the world.  But I still wonder why at least one didn’t make the Forbe’s list in August! Quite number of women all over the world are turning heads with their turntable talents. I actually stumbled on one female Latin DJ during my research. Her name is Mariana Bo. Guess what MCM? She happened to the only female DJ who made it to top 4 Latin America’s highest ranked Djs  in the electronic music scene in 2016. The remaining  3 male DJs included ALOK, VINTAGE CULTURE, CARL NUNES.  She was enlisted in 2017’s Top 100 DJs poll by Latin America. For me that was spectacular

Generally or DJcally speaking, Latin America DJ has had a thriving electronic music scene for decades now. In recent years their clubs have become mainstays in  annual Top 100 Clubs poll. I mean Latin American DJs haven’t always achieved the international recognition they deserved, until recent times. I know of another female Uk DJ Annie Mac. She’s an all-round pioneer for UK dance music (over the last 20 years).

Back in the day when lineups at musical events were strictly males in Nigeria. Now female DJs are spinning against stereotypes. Women have fought their way through the music industry as artists, DJs, producers, songwriters, vocalists etc. I mean female in the Nigerian Entertainment industry are breaking boundaries. They are stepping outside of the norm to pursue their dreams on their terms even though that part of entertainment industry is still patriarchal (male-dominated). As a DJ that you are, Do you think Nigeria needs more advocacy for Female DJing? I mean it’s somewhat harder for female DJs to earn the same respect from their peers compared to male DJs in Nigeria.

NO3: Normal Level by Dj Nana ft Zoro & Mr Real

NO 2: Mariana BO – Kolkata – a collaboration with KSHMR & JDG ‘for Spinnin’ fecords.

Who says women just want to grove singing and dancing only and wouldn’t want to DJ in a male dominated industry. Drop it!  It’s a stereotype undermining female in the world of DJing. Women are turning tables around the world and Cuppy is not an exception.

Mariana Bo  is not only a DJ and producer, but also a classically trained violinist. Her passion for real music influences her club performances. Djing talent has seen her get booked for headline sets at EDC and Ultra Music Festival as well as tours till date. She’s sure not stopping.  Also Nanayat Abedoh called DJ Nana  is one of the pioneer female Disc Jockeys in Nigeria and  one of the top female DJs in Africa as a whole.

She was trained by the legendary DJ Jimmy Jatt. Big S/O to the award winning Nigerian/African Dj Nana on the #3 spot on #AOTW. DJ Nana is is a lawyer by profession but left law to pursue her passion in DJing. she’s one of African djs who know the worth of pulling crowd even though female DJ world is very poorly represented in Nigeria. But some true talents are sharing the same stage with top notch male

Female Djs are reportedly thriving in Berlin the capital of Germany in Europe. Quite number of German population of women DJs has risen to prominence these past few years especially in EDM.  But I still wonder why at least one from that part of the world didn’t make the Forbe’s list:  Dutch-born producer Steffi; the Munich-bred D.J. Virginia; Avalon Emerson – an American EDM producer and one of the most sought-after DJs.

Berlin is arguably the world capital of EDM. I mean Europe/North America basically have got a few impressive female Djs/artists: names like Rezz, Allison Wonderland, European DJs: DJ Virginia, Kerstin Egert, DJ Barbara Preisinger, Steffi are on spotlight Some popular names like The Black Madonna, Nina Kraviz, Maya Jane Coles, Anja Schneider also made it to the top 10 Berlin female DJs of 2018. Nina Kravis is one of the not notch in Berlin right now. She’s an award winning and one of the German A list female DJs leading the Electronic Dance music (EDM).

She was named D.J. of the year by prominent dance music publication Mixmag as D.J. of the year in 2017 actually.  She has founded two labels, put out several critically acclaimed records and played the world’s top stages, from Ibiza super-clubs to festival headline slots as well as major festivals likes Coachella, Sonár, Awakenings and Decibel etc. female DJs- true talents sharing the same stage with top notch male Disc Jockeys

Just so you know women have long been active as D.J.s it’s just that more attention is beginning to be paid to their true talent.

No1: Nina Kraviz – You Are Wrong (female DJ and singer/songwriter Nina Kraviz)
