As we are gearing up to round off the year 2019 in a matter of weeks, a lot is happening in the world of music. Credible music sites such as: billboard.com reeling out best albums of 2019 yet, bigtop40.com keeping us abreast of upcoming 2019 albums by A-listers, pan-african-music.com giving updates about albums around the African continent. Apple music chart among others. It makes us over ready to usher more great music as we take a look at debut albums that have been released so far this 2019. Earlier in October, officialcharts.com made a list of artist with top 10 biggest debut studio albums of 2019 as well as peak positions. Number 1 on the list at the time was Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent peaking at #1 followed by other 4 albums which also peaked at #1: The albums were: Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go, Tom Walker’s What A Time To Be Alive, Psychodrama by Dave and Sam Fender’s Hypersonic Missiles. It’s exciting seeing these albums come through. Isn’t it?
The remaining 5 albums include: Jones’s Snacks Jax peaking at #9, AJ Tracey self-titled album AJ Tracey peaked at #3, Sigrid’s Sucker Punch peaked at #4. Mostack’s Stacko album – number 9 on the list peaked at #3 while Freya Ridings’s self-titled album Freya Ridings on number 10 peaked at #3. Actually, there were 7 English/British singers on the list: Tom Walker, Dave, Sam Fender, Jones, AJ Tracey, Mostack and Freya making the list appear as though British debut albums. Tom Walker, Dave, Sam Fender – all 3 peaked at #1. So we decided to term it Best British Debut Albums. Tom Walker is number 3, Dave is number 4, Jones is number 5, AJ Tracey is number 6 on the entire list. Shall we start off with no 4 already?
No 4 . AJ Tracey Ladbroke Grove (off His self-titled debut album AJ Tracey)
Ché Wolton Grant, better known professionally as AJ Tracey, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer, from Ladbroke Grove, West London. Tracey rose to popularity in 2016. Tracey’s first mainstream EP, Secure the Bag! (2017) entered the UK Albums Chart at number thirteen. In 2018, Tracey released the single “Butterflies” featuring British singer Not3s which served as his commercial breakthrough, peaking in the top 20 on the UK Singles Chart. His self-titled debut album, which was independently released on 8 February 2019 2019, peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and featured his highest-charting single “Ladbroke Grove”, which peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart.
The album debuted at number fifteen on the Irish Albums Chart, and also entered the Scottish Albums Chart and Dutch Album Top 100. AJ Tracey received 1 million streams on the day of its release.[26]
No 3. Jones “Jacques” with Tove Lo
Timucin Lam (born 25 July 1987), known professionally as Jax Jones, English DJ, songwriter, record producer and remixer. After his Nigerian stepfather introduced him to afrobeat via Fela Kuti and rap with a tape of the Biggie Smalls album, Jax listened to hip
hop, R&B, gospel and traditional African music. He finally rose to fame in 2014 by featuring on Duke Dumont’s number-one single “I Got U”. He followed this up with his own singles “You Don’t Know Me” featuring Raye and “Instruction” featuring Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don in 2016 and 2017, respectively.Jones’ debut studio album Snacks (Supersize) was released on 6 September 2019 through Polydor Records. Snacks was originally released in November 2018 as an EP of 5 songs Jones had already released.
In the weeks preceding the release, a brand new collaboration with Tove Lo titled “Jacques” was released as the lead single whilst the Ella Henderson collaboration “This Is Real” was promoted during the week of release. It was released as the album’s second single on 21 October 2019.
No 2. Dave- “Disaster” (one of the 3 tracks on the album which debut on the UK Singles Chart at #8 the other two “Streatham”, and “Location” debuted at, 9 and 11, respectively)
David Orobosa Omoregie (born 5 June 1998), simply called Dave, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer and actor. In 2016, Canadian rapper Drake premiered a remix single, featuring him, of Dave’s song “Wanna Know” on OVO Sound Radio which became Dave’s first entry on the UK Singles Chart Dave released his second EP Game Over in 2017, with its lead single “No Words” peaking in the top 20 on the UK Singles Chart. He later released “Funky Friday” featuring British rapper Fredo in 2018 which debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his first number-one single.
Psychodrama his debut was released on 8 March 2019. Psychodrama debuted at number one in the UK, selling 26,390 copies in its first week, with 79% of its total generated by 26.3 million stream. Psychodrama debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and went on to win the Mercury Prize. Dave is also an actor who made his acting debut in the Netflix series Top Boy season three which was released in September 2019. Dave won his first MOBO Award for the Best Newcomer Act at the 2017 ceremony on 29 November 2017. He was previously on a seven-month hiatus in 2018
No 1. Tom Walker – Leave a Light On” (off his debut What A Time To Be Alive)
Thomas Walker (born 17 December 1991) is a British singer-songwriter. He was trained at the stage school London College of Creative Media, and was given a contract soon after. He rose to fame after the release of his single “Leave a Light On”, which peaked at number 7 on the UK Singles Chart in June 2018
In 2014 he released “Just You and I”, His follow-up single was “Blessings”, the title track from his debut EP Blessings EP. In June 2017, Walker released the single “Heartland”. In September 2017, he began his US tour, in Connecticut before dropping his single “Leave a Light On” on Relentless Records in October of the same year. The music video for “Leave a Light On” was produced by Charles Mehling, and filmed in Croatia. What a Time to Be Alive is the debut studio album by Scottish singer-songwriter Tom Walker, released on 1 March 2019 through Relentless Records. It was preceded by the single “Leave a Light On”, which reached the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. In 2019, Walker won the Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards .His song “Leave the Light On” was also nominated for “Best British Single”.
We see new band being formed as well as newbies venturing into music already in UK. I feel like these artists are over ready to make us more excited about the more music this year. Many artists have certain ideas they want to express to fans with their albums before the end of this year obviously.
