The police have arraigned a 23-year-old man over alleged stolen pants.

The suspect identified as Opeyemi Adeleke, who is alleged to have stolen a woman’s panties, appeared before a Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Odjighoro on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

Punch reports that, the suspect, with all sobriety, claims to have returned the stolen panties after admitting to stealing them.

Opeyemi claimed that he returned the stolen items because his conscience kept judging him.

According to the reports, the suspect stole the pants which were left to dry outside, from the home of one Gift sunday, at the Agowande area of the state, at about 1am.

The charge of two counts of stealing leveled against the suspect, read:

“That you, Opeyemi Adeleke, on Monday, January 21, 2019, around 1am in the Agowande area of Osogbo seized the pants of one Gift Sunday without her consent and for reasons best known to you.”

The court heard from police prosecutor, Inspector Muslim Jafani, that the accused stole the pants and took them away, which contravenes sections 249 (D) and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34. Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

Given the chance to speak, the suspect claimed to have returned the pants after five minutes.

“I actually stole the pants, but within five minutes, I returned them. Please pardon me,” Opeyemi said.

He, however, pleaded guilty to the charges after which the defence counsel, Mrs Susan Ajeigbe, urged the court to grant him bail, promising to present him for every trial.

Modupe Awodele, presiding over the case, ordered the accused remanded in the Ilesha prison before adjourning the case until February 2, 2019, for ruling on the bail application.
