Cheryl and Piers Morgan led the praise for manager Gareth Southgate and his young England side after Wednesday night’s semi-final defeat.
The Three Lions suffered a crushing blow in Moscow as they missed out on the World Cup 2018 final following an extra time 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
But, although downbeat, fans up and down the country – even all over the world – have made sure the efforts of the national team, led by ex-footballer Southgate, are not forgotten in a hurry.
After live-tweeting the entire match, pop sensation Cheryl tweeted: “We still changed the history of the past 28 years I’m proud of how far we came and proud of Gareth Southgate. Congrats boys.”

While Good Morning Britain host Morgan (after ranting about the loss) commented: “Gareth Southgate & his young England team did the country proud.
“We went a lot further than I thought we would & performed with great credit on & off the pitch.
OK, I’ve stopped wailing.

Losing sucks but the future looks very exciting with this talented group of players. End. pic.twitter.com/oTMk6RiGF7— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 11, 2018

Comedian Baddiel, whose anthem Three Lions (with Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds) enjoyed soaring success during England’s campaign, also reached out to the team after the disappointing result.
Thanks to the England team, and manager, for giving us this beautiful World Cup run. It’s been a ride.
