Manchester United are confident Anthony Martial will agree to a new five-year deal to stay at the club after holding fresh talks with the forward’s representatives, Metro.co.uk understands. The Frenchman has 18 months to run on his existing deal at Old Trafford and United triggered a 12-month extension in his deal before Christmas after growing increasingly concerned at the lack of progress in talks over a long-term deal. The club had been confident of agreeing a new deal with Martial but the arrival of Alexis Sanchez 12 months ago, combined with a falling out with Jose Mourinho, led to the winger’s agent revealing that he wanted to leave the club last summer. However, Martial is far happier at the club following Mourinho’s departure and has been heartened by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him since he took charge in mid-December
Martial currently earns around £115,000-a-week at Old Trafford before bonuses and Metro.co.uk understands his representatives have held an encouraging round of talks with the club in the last fortnight over a new five-year deal. The 23-year-old rejected at least one offer from the club in 2018 but United are now offering him a base salary of closer to £190,000-a-week. The club feel there’s been a shift in negotiations since Mourinho’s departure and are now confident of getting a deal over the line in the coming weeks.
Martial’s prospective new deal would see him commit his best years to Old Trafford and the club hope it will encourage the likes of David De Gea to do the same. The Spaniard is keen to stay at the club but wants parity with Alexis Sanchez – the squad’s highest earner – on around £350,000-a-week.
