We will be touching base with how the Headies award came into being and how it has become a spectacle to behold with top notch performances and a fair attempt at delivering a world class set-up. The Nigerian Entertainment Industry has grown massively with the emergence of new talents every year.In recognizing outstanding achievement in the Nigerian music industry the biggest award show- The Headies was established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria just like the Grammy awards in the United States. The Headies was formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards.
The Headies has been consistent since 2006 but was skipped last year (2017) for the first time since 2006. The Headies has been put together in celebrating especially the Nigerian Entertainers powered by HipTV with founder being Ayo Animashaun who also created the image of the Headies. The headies image was drawn by Jide Adewoye and Matthias Aragbada.
The Headies was held annually in March for many years since inception in 2006, before it was moved to the last quarter of every year but now taken back to its original format as it happened this year being taken back to the first quarter even though it eventually held on 5th May with new categories added to reflect the realities of today’s music and entertainment industry. These four new categories include: Headies Viewer’s Choice, Industry Brand Supporter, Best Performer, and Best Song Writer of the year.

The Headies has been holding in Lagos but in 2009 held in Abuja and back to Lagos. It’s usually hosted by entertainers ( in the music and creative industry): 2006 Dare Art Alade, 2007 Tana Adelana and D’banj, 2008 Basketmouth and Dakore Egbuson, 2009 Banky W. and Kemi Adetiba, 2010 -, 2011 Rita Dominic and eLDee, 2012 M.I and Omawumi, 2013 Tiwa Savage and Dr SID, 2014 Toke Makinwa and Basketmout, 2015 Bovi and Kaffy, 2016 Falz, 2018 Seyi Shay and Bovi.
Our focus today on the AOTW is not on the history of the Headies but on the top 4 award winners at the headies awards 2018: The 12th Edition. I mean awards not restricted by genres: be it alternative, rap music, reggae, fusion, or R&B, Pop. It doesn’t matter whether these top 4 music acts had the most wins this time or not or even in the time past but the fact they remain the top 4 awarded the year in review among the big winners at the 12th edition of the Headies Music Awards.

1.Born Teniola Apata, Teni Entertainer is one of Nigeria’s fastest rising musicians breaking new grounds in the music industry.
Her sojourn in music began at age of two in the school band and since then, she has made several appearances, rocked many stages and wowed the crowd both locally and internationally performing for top dignitaries and at sold out concerts. Her stage craft has always got people talking.
Teni however kickstarted her career in 2016 when she got signed to Magic Fingers Records owned by one of Nigeria’s most talented producers and serial hit maker, Shizzi.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, her current single titled ‘Amen’ has been receiving positive reviews and feedback since its release. The prayer themed new song which was brilliantly delivered by the music sensation put her vocal dexterity and lyrical prowess on full display.(ROOKIE OF THE YEAR)
2. Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as Kiddominant is a Nigeria recording producer and disc jockey best known for producing Orezi’s hit single “Rihanna” in 2013. He was one of Pulse Nigeria‘s 2017 “Top 10 Music Producers in Nigeria”, Kiddominant has worked with several artistes including Davido, Wizkid, Popcaan, Wale, Mike Will Made It, DJ Neptune, Aka, DJ Maphorisa, Mr Eazi, Mayorkun and Orezi. His production hits include “Rihanna” by Orezi, “Double Your Hustle” by Orezi, “The Money ( Olamide ) by Davido”, “Marry (feat. Mr Eazi)” by DJ Neptune, “Fall” by Davido and “Mama” by Mayorkun. 3. Jude Abaga(born 4 October 1981), better known by his stage name MI Abaga, is a Nigerian hip hop recording artist and record producer. He has been the CEO of Chocolate City since June 2015. He won Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards, and was nominated in the Best International Act category at the BET Awards 2010. He rose to prominence in 2006 when his song “Crowd Mentality” became popular in his hometown of Jos. His critically acclaimed debut studio album, Talk About It, was released on 11 December 2008. The LP was succeeded by M.I 2 (2010). Four years after that, he released his third studio album titled The Chairman.(LYRICIST ON THE ROLL)
4. Aramide Sarumoh(born 22 June), better known as Aramide, is a Nigerian female singer and songwriter. She describes her genre of music as Afro-Soul. Her song “Iwo Nikan” earned her an award for Best Vocal Performance (Female) at the Headies 2015. She is a graduate of Political science from the University of Jos.(BEST ALTERNATIVE)
