Manchester United’s board have already decided to name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer their new permanent manager, according to reports. The Norwegian, who initially replaced Jose Mourinho on a caretaker basis, has enjoyed a phenomenal start to life at Old Trafford, winning 10 of his 11 matches as United have risen up to fourth place in the Premier League table. Solskjaer was not initially in the frame to take over on a full-time basis, with Mauricio Pochettino the standout candidate, but he has stunned United’s board with his leadership of the club.

And now The Sun report that United’s decision-makers have determined that he is the perfect man for the job and will hand him a long-term contract. It had been suggested that Solskjaer would need to overcome PSG in the Champions League to prove his credentials, but United’s board have seen enough already – though the decision may still not be announced until the end of the season.

United have explored other options, such as Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane, but Joel and Avram Glazer are convinced that Solskjaer is the right man to lead the club. Avram was at Saturday’s win over Fulham, when United emerged as 3-0 victors despite picking a heavily rotated team, and he spoke to Solskjaer in the dressing room afterwards.

Solskjaer is effectively on loan at Old Trafford from Molde, but the Norwegian club would be delighted to see one of their own land the biggest job in football. The 45-year-old has blown United’s board away with his leadership of the club, combining excellent results with free-flowing, attacking football, while he is already thought to be discussing summer transfer targets with the club.
