Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have stuck the boot into Romelu Lukaku following Wednesday night’s stalemate against Sevilla.
The Belgian striker fired a blank as Manchester United were held to a goalless draw in their Champions League clash in Spain.
And the United legends didn’t hold back in their assessment of his performance.
Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “It is so frustrating. He has all the tools and everything to scare a defender, he is big, strong, quick.
“He has scored a lot of goals but the big games, big nights, big moments, he needs to produce.
“[He had] 38 touches and 18 times he gave it away and if you are trying to produce a counter-attacking performance the ball has to stick.
“With Lukaku in the team at the moment, the ball doesn’t stick so the counter-attack doesn’t happen.”
Ferdinand’s former team-mate Scholes added: “Lukaku has to do better when you are playing counter-attacking football.
“He was so weak, he has to be strong and get hold of the ball and bring players in. Most of the time he was giving it away.
“When you set up to play counter-attacking football, you need pace. Juan Mata in the team, he is a great footballer but in a team that has possession, there was no pace on either wing.”
