Prosecutors in the Dominican Republic revealed on Monday the name of the crime boss who allegedly ordered the killing of former baseball star David Ortiz last week.
Speaking in court, authorities said José Eduardo [Chuky] Ciprián, who is currently serving a sentence for murder, ordered Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota to act as an intermediary and pay $8,000 to the assassins to carry out the hit. Rodríguez Mota is currently on the run from police.
Court documents showed a second intermediate called Gabriel Alexander Pérez Vizcaíno provided an iPhone, which was used for contact between Rodríguez Mota and the crime boss. Ciprián reportedly texted a photo of the intended target to the iPhone and discussed attack logistics.
Pérez Vizcaíno, who was handed to authorities by his father, met the attackers at a local gas station and presented the group a picture of Ortiz before the former baseball star was shot in the back at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo on June 9.

Pérez Vizcaíno was reportedly with the assassins when Ortiz was gunned down. He later boarded a vehicle with one of the suspects, who remains at-large.
Prosecutors also revealed that Pérez Vizcaíno sold the iPhone used in the attempted murder to a woman for $174, which ultimately led police to the device.
Pérez Vizcaíno is due back in court Monday evening to learn if he’ll be jailed for his involvement in the shooting.
Officials in the Dominican Republic have also promised to reveal the suspected motive behind the attack.
Since the shooting, there have been many theories over who wanted Ortiz dead and why.
