Hey guys! Hope you are staying safe this period.Corona Virus is real and don’t ever take precautions for granted. Today we give tips on how to protect ourselves during this tricky weather in order to prevent illness. The whole world already has that one virus that it has been fighting since March (11th) when the WHO officially declared the coronavirus pandemic). Now, going back to the abnormal weather/the tricky weather, lately, the Lagos weather in particular has been quite hot with sudden rains and the weather is becoming unpredictable anymore. And it’s not in our DNA to always check the weather report so we prepare accordingly, so leaves us confused.
Lately when it rains heavily, the next minute after the rain is very hot weather. Have you been paying attention by the way? If you haven’t, you should start paying attention for maximum protection. Remember, as we fight COVID-19, we need to care about other health matters, as minute as this, that have the tendency to develop into serious health issues. Let’s recall that sometime in December 2019, we talked about staying healthy during heat wave- a period of abnormally hot weather.
At the time I said that Nigeria has started experiencing such weather and that continuous exposure to such heat condition could result in heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death referencing an international study cited in nationalgeographic.com which said “many more people will be exposed to extreme weather events over the next century than previously thought“ and that in this kind of weather condition, “children, the elderly, pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems” are said to be “most at risk” (according to telegraph.co.uk).
You can say sheybi na Naija we dey. Yes! But as Nigerians we need to start taking climate change seriously. We are seen the devastating effects of climate change already. You don’t have to wait until it starts taking toll on you, on your child or your family as a whole. The rains are beginning to catch unawares by coming too early.. Last year January, Lagos and other southern regions have seen very unusual heavy downpours. At some point it started raining in successive turns with so much flooding during dry season. Since then, Meteorologists (weather experts) have been saying it’s abnormal weather resulting from climate change.
There is t hardly any part of the world or state in Nigeria that is not experiencing one form of extreme weather or the other. You don’t want to joke with the sun in Jos. The harmattan in Abuja. Sometimes both could be moderate in Lagos but now the weather in Lagos is becoming tricky. Drastic weather changes can lead to migraines. Change in temperature can mess up your immune system and could make you more vulnerable to viruses. These four tips, however, could help you stay protected from all sorts of Illnesses or to avoid getting sick when the weather changes this period of rain and sudden sun kind-of weather.
- Wash your hands after using the bathroom or touching handrails and other public faculties to prevent any form of illness sneaking up on you because when it rains viruses and other bacteria gather up in such places and most of the times we don’t know we have touched somehow rub in our faces afterward.
- Consume a lot of vitamins. It is one of the best ways to strengthen your immune system. It fights off unwanted infections makes you less susceptible to illness.
- Drink more liquid like water to keep yourself hydrated especially when the sun is freaky scorching
- Rest appropriately. Always take a rest whenever you feel exhausted. This helps in rejuvenating the body.
Please remember to wear a face mask any time you are out in public, practice physical distancing and report any suspected case of Covid-19 to the health authorities. Stay safe!
