Nike has announced it will be increasing the salary of 7,000 of its employees after an internal review of the company’s paystructure.

From August onwards pay for 10 per cent of Nike’s staff will be adjusted.

A spokeswoman for the company said the payment adjustments were being put in place to ensure that Nike salaries remain competitive within the industry and “support a culture in which employees feel included and empowered.”

The review was undertaken after some employees claimed of workplace misconduct and discrimination against women.

Earlier in the year some of the company’s male executives were fired for behaviour issues which some media reports tied to sexual harassment and bullying.

But the Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker described the men’s actions to Bloomberg as “behaviour inconsistent with our values,” at the time.

Nike’s overhaul based on the pay review reflects a move taken by a number of companies recently to address pay inequality in the work place.

This year, Citigroup Inc announced that it would be reforming its pay structure narrowing discrepancies for for women, minorities and others who warranted better compensation.

Nike also announced that it will be addressing how it determines bonus payouts.

The company said moving forward bonuses will be based on company world-wide success and not on individual performance.
