NGO Provides Free Prosthetic Breasts For Cancer Survivors

As part of activities marking the 2018 World Cancer Day, Posche Secrets, a non-governmental organisation, has reiterated its commitment to supporting breast cancer survivors with free prosthesis.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women globally. While it appears to be more prevalent in developed countries, the incidence rates are also rising in developing countries where the situation is often worsened by late diagnosis.

After undergoing mastectomy and other surgical procedures to the breast, survivors are faced with the need for prosthesis, which are often very expensive and uncomfortable.

Posche Secrets has set out to bridge this gap by giving out crocheted knockers and special hand-made prosthesis, which are comfortable, adjustable and easy to maintain.

Commenting on the development, the founder of the organisation, Adefunke Akoni, described it as an effort to encourage breast cancer survivors and make it easier for them to feel better about their body.

“Beneficiaries have expressed delight at the comfort they experienced since they received our breast prosthesis,” Akoni said.

“The crocheted knockers are a lot more manageable than traditional prosthesis and we’re offering them free of charge as a token of love from our volunteers and supporters,” she added.

The lightweight and adjustable design of the knockers are a sharp contrast to the heaviness and discomfort associated with traditional breast prosthesis, she enthused.

“The knockers can be placed in a normal bra and do not require special care.

“They can be washed softly in a bowl of warm water and washing liquid after which they should be rinsed and left to dry,” she volunteered.
