Newcastle Need a New Striker, Insists Benitez

While the spirit in the Magpies’ ranks has pleased the ex-Liverpool boss, he wants to see more quality added to his panel

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez says that his side could finish even higher next season with the right additions to the squad.

On Wednesday, the former Real Madrid boss watched his side lose 1-0 to Tottenham, frustrating the 58-year-old due to their inability to take their chances early in the game.

Newcastle are fighting to finish in the top half of the table, but Benitez believes there is more to come from this squad if they can add firepower.

“We know that we need to keep the same team spirit, the same mentality, the same commitment from all these players, and a little bit more quality to help and be sure that in this kind of game, you take your chances and win,” he said.

The St James’ Park outfit currently have the best defence outside of the top seven but have scored a paltry 36 goals in 37 outings.

Their top scorer this season is Ayoze Perez, who has hit only eight goals, followed by Dwight Gayle and Joselu, who have hit five and four respectively.

The Tyneside club have been linked with a move for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen in recent weeks, but the solution to their striking woes could already be within the club.

Aleksander Mitrovic has rarely featured under Benitez but has given the Spaniard food for thought thanks to his form on loan at Fulham, where he has scored 12 times in 17 outings.

Rather than look to sign a new forward, Newcastle may put Mitrovic back into the fold next season.
