Multiple people were killed in a school shooting that took place at Santa Fe High School on Friday morning. According to the school’s assistant principal, the shooter “has been arrested and secured.”
In a telephone interview with Houston television station KTRK, one student reported that a gunman came into her first-period art class and began to shoot. She said she saw a girl with blood on her leg when the class evacuated the room.
“We thought it was a fire drill at first but really, the teacher said, ‘Start running,'” the student told KTRK.
The girl said she did not get a good look at the shooter because she was running away. She explained that students were escaping through a door at the back of the classroom.
A Texas school district issued an alert at 8 a.m. reporting that the school had gone into lockdown.
“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter,” the Santa Fe Independent School District wrote. “The district has initiated a lockdown at the high school. We will send out information as soon as possible.”
At 9:05 a.m. the Dickinson Independent School District went into “protect mode” following the initial reports. During protect mode, all doors are locked and personnel are stationed at outer doors to allow people in or out. No students are allowed outside the building.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to the shooting, as well as Harris County Sheriff units.
A large police presence was at the school, authorities say.
Students were evacuated from the school.

The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody, according to the assistant principal at Santa Fe High School.
