Longest Leading No. 1 Songs On The Billboard Hot 100 In The Last Decade

Did we tell you during the last show that some very interesting features would be making their ways to the #AOTW segment mostly this month? Yeah! All for your listening pleasure. We are going to be hooking you up with stuff like most featured artists in Nigeria, in Africa, and the world in the last decade. What songs has stayed the longest on the billboard hot 100 at No1. We will also be looking at some interesting African albums that have been released in 2020 so far and many more vibes.

We are doing this to add more flavour to this segment as we like do. So, today we brought you songs that have spent at least 10 weeks at the No 1 spot in the last ten years. It’s very interesting to find out that some thirteen some great songs have actually spent 19 or 16 weeks on the billboard.com in the last one decade. These music are not large in number. You will find out shortly.

Absolutely! According to billboard.com earlier in March – i.e during the first quarter of this year (2020), and just few days to end the month of March, a list comprising about 40 varying genres of songs with the caption: ”The Longest-Leading Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s”. These songs were grouped based on the duration they have spent on the chart: 19, 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10 weeks. Only one song spent 19 weeks on the chart, two songs spent 16 weeks, seven songs stayed for 14 weeks, two for 13 weeks, eight for 12 weeks, six for 11 weeks, thirteen for 10 weeks making a total of 39 songs at the time.

Now to make the groove more fun for you guys, #TheBoxShow decides to pick top 4 among these longest leading songs in the last one decade; that is, those songs that have been leading at the #1 spots between 2010 and now. Some of these chart-toppers span five decades from various international music acts: UK, US, Caribbean region, Latin and other part of Europe. Top 5 includes: “We Found Love,” Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, Nov. 12, 2011m “Happy,” Pharrell Williams, March 8, 2014m “Hello” Adele, Nov. 14, 2015m “One Dance,” Drake featuring WizKid & Kyla, April 23, 2016 and “In My Feelings,” Drake, July 21, 2018.

These were songs that spent 10 weeks on the billboard hot 100 and we have picked 4 out them in no particular order. Coming through right now at #4 is:

No 4    We Found Love,” Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, Nov. 12, 2011

Some gist here:  Some of the great women that dominated the chat for longer weeks from the late 70s and early 80s, were/are the Grammy winning American singer and actress Debby Boone’s hit single “You Light Up My Life of 1977 and the four-time Grammy Award winning British-Australian singer, dancer, and activist Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical,” of 1981 both spent 10 consecutive weeks at No1 spot on the billboard hot 100 respectively.

Let’s not forget the late Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. That song spent 14 good weeks on the chart in 1992. Great women in must they were and still are. There are other longest staying chart-toppers of early, mid up until late 90s. We talk about them after #3 and #2:

Some of the bangers of mid 2000 include: See You Again,” Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, April 25, 2015 (12 weeks)

Towards the late 2000, just about three years ago, we had “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, May 27, 2017 (spending 16 weeks), “Shape of You,” Ed Sheeran, Jan. 28, 2017 (12 weeks) and this year 2020, “The Box,” Roddy Ricch, Jan. 18, 2020 (11 weeks). Our very own Wizkid was actually featured on a song that spent 10 weeks on the billboard back in 2016. And this makes it big for Nigeria to the world. That song is sitting at #1 right now!
