The announcement of Jennifer Lopez as the act to perform at the 2019 Grammy Awards in honor Motown Records has generated lots of criticism on social media.
Jennifer Lopez was picked to honor the record label on its 69th anniversary. The label was home to some of the finest soul singers ever seen in the music industry e.g Michael Jackson, Dianna Ross, The temptations etc.
According to the critics of the choice of Jennifer Lopez as the singer to honor Motown Records with a performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards, the singer is not fit for the role because she lacks the vocal range the artistes on the label are known for.
They also wonder why a Latina is picked to honor a black entertainment platform especially on Black History Month.

Bruno MarsDamn I would rather have Sam Smith or Adele if we going to chose a non-Black person
But y’all chose J. LO to perform MOTOWN during BLACK HISTORY MONTH. https://t.co/4XONMmPlCa

J.Lo built her career off of shoddy vocals, over-marketed sex appeal, and the cultural theft of Black women who are far more talented than she is, yet have not received the recognition they deserve. Having her do this Motown “tribute” is an insult.

J.Lo doing the MoTown tribute is stupid. AT LEAST choose a Latina with a great voice if you’re gonna insult the black community like that to begin with. #grammys

J.Lo cannot sing, she is a dancer who tries to sing. Why let her do the Motown tribute when there are others with actual range? Very disappointing. #GRAMMYs

Who the hell authorized J Lo to perform a #Motown Tribute @ the 2019 Grammys? This woman is not a Soul singer! Her voice does not match those of the Motown legacy. They could’ve booked Normani, Brandy, Jennifer Hudson, Tamia, Latocha Scott, Kelly Rowland, Deborah Cox, Tamar, etc. pic.twitter.com/UkKQnlN9st

So, you mean to tell me…with all the great soul singers existing today along with the great Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves, Mary Wilson, and about 274 Temptations still with us amongst others, J. LO is the person the #GRAMMYs chose to do the #Motown tribute? pic.twitter.com/b1koFisGTV
