A football player has died after collapsing during a training session.

The sad news was announced by Westside FC on their club Twitter account.

The player, who the non-league club have chosen not to name, died on Wednesday night, reports Surrey Live.

A club spokesperson said: “Westside FC is saddened to announce that one of our players collapsed and died at training on July 17.

“Despite efforts by those there and the paramedics, sadly he could not be revived.

“Our condolences go to his family and friends.”

The post has been flooded with hundreds of messages of support from fans and fellow teams.

Westside FC are based in Wandsworth, south London, and play at AFC Croydon’s ground.

The team has just been promoted to the Combined Counties Football League Division One.

Many fans wrote messages of support to the club on Twitter.

Billie Graham tweeted: “There are no words – just sheer sadness. I’m so so so sorry.

“I can’t begin to comprehend what you all witnessed and must be going through.“Sending lots of love to you all at the club and his family.”

Dorking Wanderers said in a tweet to the club: “Our deepest condolences to family, friends and everyone at your club.”

The cause of death is not known at this stage.
