A Zimbabwean man, Mandlenkosi Maphosa, 38, has been charged to court for allegedly beating his 15-year-old daughter, Lubelihle Maphosa to death after he found out, that she had a boyfriend.
It was alleged that Maphosa, a gold panner in Bulawayo whipped his daughter and left her with bleeding cuts all over her body on August 13, reports The Chronicle.
After she died five days later, Maphosa told police that Lubelihle had been attacked by unknown assailants.
Prosecutor Teererai Mahohoma told the court: “On August 13 Maphosa beat up his daughter with a tire-made whip several times all over the body as a way of reprimanding her for having a boyfriend. She sustained injuries from the assault and Maphosa concealed what he had done by refusing to take her to the hospital.
“She died on August 18 as a result of injuries sustained during the assault and Maphosa went on to report to the police that his daughter was attacked by unknown assailants while she was on her way home at night in order to conceal the offence. Police carried out investigations and discovered that someone had seen Maphosa assaulting the now deceased which led to his arrest,” said Ms Mahohoma.
Maphosa was not asked to plead when he appeared briefly before Gwanda provincial magistrate, Maphios Moyo facing murder charges.
The court asked that he should be in custody till September 3, when the case will come up for hearing.
