Donald Trump Jr and his wife Vanessa Trump are separating after being married for 12 years, the couple announced in a joint statement on Thursday.
Donald Jr, the oldest son of the US president, and Mrs Trump, both 40, have been married since 2005 and the pair have five children together.
“After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways,” the statement said.
“We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”
The statement came after numerous US media outlets reported that Mrs Trump filed for an uncontested divorce in the Manhattan Supreme Court.
It comes after days of speculation that the pair were having relationship difficulties, with Mr Trump’s busy schedule and tweeting said to be a factor.
Donald Jr has been co-running Trump Organisation, the family business, with his 34-year-old brother Eric ever since their father entered the White House.
He gave a speech in India recently and reportedly has been spending more time on the road than before his father stepped into politics.
Last month, Mrs Trump was taken to a hospital as a precaution after she opened a letter containing white powder. It turned out to be non-hazardous.
Donald Jr said at the time: “Thankful that Vanessa & my children are safe and unharmed after the incredibly scary situation that occurred this morning.
“Truly disgusting that certain individuals choose to express their opposing views with such disturbing behavior.”
The US president himself is on his third wife after previously being married to Czech model Ivana Zelníčková and Marla Maples.
Mr Trump’s marriage to Melania Trump has entered the spotlight recently amid claims by the ex-porn star Stormy Daniels that she had an affair with him. Mr Trump’s layers have denied the claim.
The Telegraph has approached a spokesman from the New York courts for comment.
