Draw facts
1) Lionel Messi has never registered against Chelsea in eight previous matches, the most he has faced any club without scoring.
2) Chelsea have had the better of 12 previous meetings with Barcelona, with four wins to the Liga side’s three. The Blues prevailed in the most recent clash, edging a 3-2 aggregate victory in the 2011/12 semi-finals (when Messi missed a second-leg penalty).
3) Paris’s tie with Real Madrid has special meaning for Ángel Di María, who spent four seasons in the Spanish capital and was man of the match in the 2014 UEFA Champions League final, his penultimate outing for the Merengues.
4) Group winners (the teams playing home second legs) have progressed in 72.3% of round of 16 ties since the current competition format was introduced.
How the draw worked
Two seeding pots were formed: one consisting of group winners and the other of runners-up. No team could play a club from their group or any side from their own association.
