Carl Frampton says a large ornament was knocked over on to his hand in a “freak accident” – forcing him to pull out of his fight against Emmanuel Dominguez.
Saturday’s bout in Philadelphia, USA was due to be Frampton’s first since December’s defeat by Josh Warrington.
In a statement on social media, the Northern Irishman said he has broken a bone and is “absolutely devastated”.
The 32-year-old Belfast boxer also posted a video of the aftermath of the incident in his hotel lobby.
Frampton is a former world champion at super-bantamweight and featherweight.
“Today a freak accident occurred,” he said. “A large ornament, in the hotel lobby, was knocked over accidentally and hit me on the left hand, fracturing the fifth metacarpal.
“I’m extremely disappointed for the travelling support, and for myself and for my team.
“I’ve put everything into this camp. I’ve been away from my amazing wife and kids for most of it and it all seems like a waste.
“Although it was out of my control, I’d like to apologise to Emmanuel, MTK Global, Top Rank, my team, my travelling support and to my wife and kids for being away so long.”
In an interview with Joe, Frampton said he had spent “close to £30K on the training camp” for the fight against 25-year-old Mexican Dominguez and it was “money down the drain”.
“I’ve been out here in Philly for three and a half weeks now, and I have nothing to show for it,” he said.
“They say it’s four to six weeks. And it should be fine, but… I haven’t got four to six weeks, have I? The fight’s on Saturday night.”
Frampton had posted on social media earlier on Monday that he had just finished his “last hard session” before the contest.
He also had a fight cancelled in 2017 when opponent Andres Gutierrez slipped in the shower before the bout.
Frampton had hinted he may retire after his loss to England’s Warrington, before signing a multi-fight deal with promoters Top Rank in March.
