Beyonce is set to voice Nala in Disney and Jon Favreau’s star-studded live-action remake of The Lion King. On Wednesday the superstar confirmed the role on her Facebook account in a post that was simply captioned: “#TheLionKing 2019.” The star-studded voice cast also includes Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa (reprising his role from the 1994 original), Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar and Alfre Woodard as Simba’s mother Sarabi.
John Oliver will star as Zazu, John Kani as Rafiki, Florence Kasumba as Shenzi, Eric Andre as Azizi, and Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa. JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright Joseph will play young Simba and young Nala, respectively. Variety first reported that Beyonce had the offer for the role earlier this year, before the Drunk In Love star had closed the deal.
Jon Favreau also helmed 2016’s live-action remake of The Jungle Book. Beyonce last voiced a film back in 2013, as Queen Tara, the queen of the forest in animation Epic. The Lion King has made $968.5 million (£772.7 million) since its 1994 release. The live-action Lion King will be in cinemas from July 19, 2019.
