Anchor University, Lagos, on Tuesday said it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Centre for Space Physics on space research.
Head of Physics Department, Dr. Victor Nwankwo, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the university has been seeking ways to establish a strong research base in space science.
According to him, Anchor University needs a world-class research institute that is willing to collaborate with it.
NAN reports that the Indian Centre for Space Physics is an Indian non-profit research organisation dedicated to carrying out advanced research in astronomy, astrophysics and space science.
Nwankwo, who initiated the research collaboration, said, “The university prepared a proposal requesting for research collaboration with the centre.
“They are enthusiastic about it and finally agreed to collaborate with us.
“As part of the collaboration, they gave us a low-frequency radio wave receiver and I was trained on how to install it.’’
He explained that the receiver would pick data from the ionosphere, which enables the researchers to study irregularities in the atmosphere, solar flares and seasonal variations.
The HOD said he was optimistic that Anchor University would be one of the strong research centres where research institutes and universities can resort to for data in space science.
“Once the equipment is successfully installed and in good working condition, we will seek collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja.
“We also hope to hold a conference in the future with other research institutes in the country in related area.
“The conference will enable us to exchange data and ideas,’’ he said.
