Manchester City are brilliant, and Kevin De Bruyne is one of the most brilliant of their brilliant players. The Belgian was at it again on Saturday evening, scoring the second of City’s goals as they overwhelmed Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium, where Ilkay Gundogan was also on target and Raheem Sterling bagged a late brace.
But it was what De Bruyne did after he scored on Saturday that really caught the attention. After blasting his shot past Hugo Lloris, the midfielder ran towards the camera and held two fingers up on his right hand and one on his left.
There were initially some suggestions that De Bruyne was mocking Manchester United following City’s 2-1 Manchester derby victory at Old Trafford last week, and even some even more niche ones that he was stating that City were now 21 points ahead of Spurs.
But it wasn’t either of them.
Instead, it seemed as though De Bruyne’s celebration was meant as a special message to David Silva, the City schemer who missed the match due to personal reasons. Holding up the fingers to signify 21, Silva’s shirt number, De Bruyne was letting the midfielder know that he was in his teammates’ thoughts. Those tributes then extended to the dressing room post-match, when City’s players posed with Silva’s No. 21 shirts, as seen in Leroy Sane’s post-match tweet.
In the image, you can see members of City’s backroom team holding up the ’21’ sign too, echoing De Bruyne, who hailed his side’s approach after the game.
“We are here to win titles,” he said.
“We had a great start, it’s still more than half [of the season remaining] so it’s still very difficult – we want to win every game and everybody who comes in is doing an incredible job.”
