The Seizures Caused by Emotional Pain, Not Brain Activity

Functional seizures (FS), also known as psychogenic nonepileptic seizures or PNES, are attacks that resemble epilepsy-related seizures. They happen due to psychological distress, not abnormal electrical activity in your brain. You can manage FS with cognitive behavioral therapy.

 Psychological Trauma

Past traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual), accidents, or violence are one of the most common causes. The brain may convert unresolved emotional pain into physical symptoms like seizures as a coping mechanism.

Chronic Stress

Long-term exposure to stress (family problems, financial struggles, academic pressure, or work stress) can overwhelm the mind. When emotional tension builds up without release, it may manifest physically as PNES episodes.

Underlying Mental Health Disorders

Conditions like Depression ,Anxiety Disorder  or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are strongly linked to PNES. These disorders affect emotional regulation, making individuals more vulnerable to dissociative symptoms like seizures.

Emotional Suppression

People who struggle to express emotions (anger, sadness, fear) may unconsciously “bottle up” feelings. Over time, these suppressed emotions can find an outlet through physical symptoms such as PNES episodes.

And finally,  Counseling can bring up a lot of feelings that you hide away or try not to think about. If you feel overwhelmed with your emotions or feel unsafe, know that your counselor is there for you to help you in this journey. It’s important to contact your healthcare providers to help you or address any questions you may have about your treatment. All informations are gotten from Cleveland clinics.
