Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, known professionally as Doechii (/ˈdoʊtʃi/), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida, where she was raised. She is the daughter of mother Celesia Moore and father Snatcha Da Boss, a rapper who recorded professionally. She has described her upbringing as Christian. Doechii attended Howard W. Blake High School and grew up performing ballet, tap dancing, acting, cheerleading, doing gymnastics, and playing soccer. She planned to become a professional choral singer until a friend encouraged her to produce and release her music online as an independent artist. She first gained attention on TikTok, leading her to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records in 2022. Doechii currently resides in Los Angeles, having lived in New York City before the COVID-19 pandemic, during which she published YouTube vlogs about her daily life. Doechii started writing poetry and rap lyrics in high school and had started making music by 2014. Doechii released her debut song “Girls” on SoundCloud in 2016 under the name Iamdoechii. Her music has been compared by critics to that of Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and Missy Elliott. Doechii has described her style of music as alternative hip hop, and credits Busta Rhymes for inspiring her expressive performance approach.

Four: What It Is (Block Boy) ft. Kodak Black

“What It Is (Block Boy)” is a song by American rapper and singer Doechii, released by Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records on March 17, 2023, as a non-album single. The original features American rapper Kodak Black, but a solo version, without Black, was released simultaneously. Six variations of the track were released, which include sped-up and slowed-down versions. It has garnered over 91M views on it’s Official Music Video on YouTube. The music video was released alongside the single. It shows Doechii dancing and strutting in chaps, while Kodak Black plays her love interest. Produced by J. White Did It and Brian Kennedy, it is Doechii’s first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 29, and also her first top-40. It also reached the top 10 in Malaysia and the Philippines. Critics praised Doechii’s vocal versatility and the track’s catchy, nostalgic vibe.  However, the inclusion of Kodak Black sparked controversy due to his past legal issues.  In response, Doechii released a solo version of the song, allowing listeners to enjoy the track without his contribution.

Three: Nissan Altima

Released on July 27, 2024 as the lead single from her third mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal (2024) is Doechii’s song called “Nissan Altima”. It was produced by Childish Major. In the song, Doechii performs in a rapid-fire flow. The lyrics center around Doechii asserting her dominance in sexual matters, with emphasis on her bisexuality. It has garnered over 160M streams on spotify and over 14M views on its Official Music Video on YouTube. The accompanying music video, directed by James Mackel, features Doechii cruising in a Nissan Altima alongside fellow Top Dawg Entertainment artists Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Isaiah Rashad.  Even when the car is towed, they continue to perform atop the tow truck, symbolizing resilience and unity. The song charted internationally, reaching No. 19 on Australia’s Hip Hop/R&B chart, No. 77 in Ireland, and No. 24 on New Zealand’s Hot Singles chart. The song earned a nomination for Best Rap Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards, highlighting Doechii’s rising prominence in the hip-hop scene.

Two: Timeless (Remix) ft The Weeknd & Playboi Carti

“Timeless (Remix)” is a dynamic collaboration between The Weeknd, Playboi Carti, and Doechii, released on May 9, 2025.  This remix adds a fresh layer to the original track, which debuted on September 27, 2024, as the lead single from The Weeknd’s sixth studio album, Hurry Up Tomorrow. In this updated version, Doechii opens the track with a commanding verse that injects new energy and perspective.  Playboi Carti follows with his signature melodic trap style, and The Weeknd delivers the chorus and closing verse with his characteristic falsetto and introspective lyrics. It has garnered over 393K views on it’s Official Music Video on YouTube. The original “Timeless” track achieved significant international success, peaking at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and entering the top ten in 15 countries  . The remix, featuring Doechii, has been well-received, with critics praising the seamless integration of her verse and the renewed vibrancy it brings to the song.

  • Doechii has received widespread recognition for her artistry, with several notable awards and nominations.
  • In 2025, she won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, making her the third woman in history to win in that category after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. That same year, she was also nominated for Best Rap Performance for “Nissan Altima” and Best New Artist.
  • Earlier in her career, she received the Rising Star award at the 2023 Billboard Women in Music event, and by 2025, she was named Woman of the Year, becoming only the third artist after Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande to earn both honors. At the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, she won Outstanding New Artist and was also nominated for Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Album (Alligator Bites Never Heal), and Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album for “Alter Ego” featuring JT.

“Denial Is a River” is a song by American rapper Doechii featured on her 2024 Grammy-winning mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal. “Anxiety” is a poignant single by American rapper Doechii, officially released on March 4, 2025, through Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records.  The track, which delves into themes of mental health and personal struggle, was originally recorded in 2019 and gained significant attention after going viral on TikTok in early 2025.  This resurgence prompted Doechii to re-record the song, leading to its official release and inclusion as a bonus track on the extended edition of her Grammy-winning mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. This track has garnered over 262M streams on spotify and over 18M views on it’s Official Music Video on YouTube. Upon its release, “Anxiety” achieved remarkable commercial success.  It debuted at number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking Doechii’s highest-charting single in the United States to date.  Internationally, the song topped charts in countries including Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Greece, and Latvia, and secured top ten positions in several other nations such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. The official music video for “Anxiety,” directed by James Mackel, was released in April 2025.  The visual narrative complements the song’s themes, portraying Doechii navigating a series of surreal and chaotic scenarios that symbolize the turmoil of anxiety.
