The Nigeria Labour Congress in Kaduna State has appealed to the State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, to obey the court and pay the entitlements of sacked teachers.

The NLC Chairman in the state, Adamu Ango, who stated this during the workers’ day celebration in the state capital on Tuesday, also declared that workers as the engine room of development in the country deserved respect from government.

The NLC and the United Labour Congress in the state held a parallel workers’ day celebration as part of activities marking the day.

The NLC held a rally at its Secretariat along the Independence Way, while the ULC held a procession from the Lagos Roundabout to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in the heart of the city.

The Chairman of the ULC, Ephraim James, had earlier in his speech decried the onslaught against Nigerian workers. He said that the workers deserved better than they presently get.

He said the government could pay a minimum wage of N96, 000.

“The government can pay the N96,000 being demanded by the organised labour as minimum wage. Nigerian workers can no longer allow themselves to be treated as slaves.

“The choice of N96,000 as a minimum wage was arrived at after all key factors and indicators were taken into consideration.

“We are concerned about the welfare of Nigerian workers. That is why we proposed a minimum wage of N96,000 after looking at all key indices and factors. We know that government can pay the money if it is serious. But beyond that, we are even ready for negotiation.”
