34 students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) have been offered a N10 million scholarship to study engineering in China.

The institution’s vice chancellor, Prof Ibrahim Garba, said the scholarship is a product of the collaboration between ABU and China’s Central South University (CSU) which would see selected students spending two years in ABU and proceeding to round up their remaining three years of studies at CSU, Daily Trust reports.

the 34 benefitting students were chosen from both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Addressing the beneficiaries, he said: “This time around, we actually invested quite a lot. We paid over N10 million to freight you to China and this is public money that is paid from the school fees of everybody.

So, bear in mind that you are partly going on public funds and then from the scholarship of the Central South University.

So far, we are very happy to have realised that the first batch that we sent have not disappointed us. They have actually made us proud by performing very well, living well and respecting the traditions and situations in China.”

The partnership between Nigerian and China was also described by the director, Directorate of University Advancement, Professor Ahmed Adamu, as an opportunity to reform the various economic sectors in the country.

He said: “The choice of the students was based on merit. The benefiting students were drawn from across Nigeria, regardless of tribe, religion or ethnic background.

I want to urge you to take full advantage of this unique opportunity.” Aliyu Kasimu, who spoke on behalf of the students, gave the assurance that the recipients would make the school and nation proud.
