The 42-year-old suspect has been charged with rape, murder and defeating the ends of justice over the death of Uyinene Mrwetyana.
University of Cape Town student Ms Mrwetyana, went missing over a week ago.
Prosecutor Nomnikelo Konisi claimed the suspect was an employee at Clareinch Post Office, who had lured the 19-year-old into a trap.
When she returned, the suspect locked the door and raped and killed her, before dumping her body, it is claimed.
Police found blood in the post office and the alleged murderer’s car.
Mr Konisi said the suspect had admitted his guilt and told police where the student’s body was located.
The 42-year-old stood grinning before members of the public in Wynberg Magistrates Court on Monday as he heard the charges against him.
One man in the public gallery screamed ‘you pig’ as the suspect was taken down to the cells.
