Enraged Residents Set Ablaze Cars And House Of A Vigilante Who Shot Dead An Innocent Man In Anambra

Properties worth millions of Naira were razed on Monday, over the alleged murder of a 27-year-old man by the Commander of the Vigilante group in Ogbunike, Oyi local government Area of Anambra state. It was gathered that the deceased Ndubisi Oye was preparing for his wedding set for Sunday, October 22, when he was shot and killed by the Commander identified as Chief Levy Elobis along St. Monica’s Road, Ogbunike.

The fiancee of the deceased, Oluma Agbugba who narrated their ordeal said:

“We were coming back from a committee of friends meeting, in preparation for our wedding around 9.30 pm on Sunday. We got to St. Monica’s road; my fiancé alighted to refill the gas of his commercial bus.

“As we were about driving off, one Hillux Jeep blocked our bus and a man from the jeep came down and ordered that both of us should come down from the bus. “I alighted and sighted the man with a gun. Out of fear, I wanted to make calls, but the man quickly stopped me, saying he will kill me if I raise my phone again for calls. “The man ordered my fiance (Oye) to come down from steering and immediately he shot into the air, threatening to shoot him (my fiance).

” As we were pleading, the man shot my fiance. I couldn’t shout out of fear. After some minutes he drove off, leaving him in his pool of blood. “I started shouting after he left and some passers-by intervened. Before we got to Iyienu hospital he died.”

It was gathered that the deceased, 27 years, hailed from Ezza, Ebonyi State, while the bereaved, Miss Olumma Agbugba hailed from Imo state. On hearing what happened, Ebonyi people living in Ogbunike went on rampage in the early hours of Monday and set the house of the commander and his three cars ablaze. One of the indigenes of the community and the Special Assistant to the governor on Youth Mobilisation, Mr Junior Onwutaka, said he saw some men who went on rampage to the commander’s house, he tried to intervened, but the mob overpowered him.

“I saw some angry mob moving on rampage to his house, I tried to intervened to know what was going on but they were much. They invaded the commander’s house and razed his duplex and three cars.” Onwutaka said. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar who confirmed the incident, said his command intervened and the Vigilante commander was now in police custody.

“We have ordered for the arrest of those who burnt the commander’s properties. The commander is now in police custody while we do our normal investigation. ” Umar added.
